Jake Anthony Harper
Anthology Poetry Editor
Hello there!
When I started my undergraduate degree with the University of Gloucestershire, I was convinced I would focus on prose and dramatic writing, thinking I’d leave poetry behind. However, jump forward three years, and my prose has taken the backseat, dramatic writing has been dropped, and I have poetry published in two years of the UoG Anthology, as well as two published in issues of Indigo Dream’s Dawntreader magazine.
One of the things about poetry that grabbed me away from the other forms of creative writing was how much you could convey, even narratively, within such a short piece. In particular, I found this went hand-in-hand with my interest in folklore and myth.
With a bit of research, I found that the Dawntreader was the perfect magazine for this niche mythological poetry I was amassing. In the magazine’s “About” section, it explains the type of poetry they focus on, which included the theme I had adopted.
As of now, I have one poem, ‘The Wendigo’, published with them – and another, ‘Banshee’, due to be published in a later issue.
My advice to any writer, particularly poetry writers, is to research the publishing market, particularly if your interests are niche, and learn to tailor your work to its interests and trends.
